REDWOOD FOREST SPECIES
* Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)
* Sequoia sempervirens is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae. Common names include coast redwood, California redwood, and ogre redwood. It is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living 12001800 years or more. This species includes the tallest trees on Earth, reaching up to 379 feet in height (without the roots) and up to 26 feet in diam at breast height. Before commercialised logging and clearing began by the 1850s, this massive tree occurred by nature in an estimated 2,100,000 acres along much of coastal northerly California and the southwestern corner of coastal Oregon. An estimated 95% or more of the original old-growth redwood forest has been cut down, repayable to its excellent properties for use as lumber in construction.

The flowers are individually lesser and inconspicuous, 2-3 mm across, produced in a dense, rounded, greenish-white flowerhead 2 cm diameter; the 4-8 large white petals are actually bracts, each bract 4-7 cm long and broad. The fruit is a compound pink-red berry closely 3 cm diameter, containing 50-100 small seeds; it is edible, though not in truth palatable. Some Plateau Indian tribes used the bark as a laxative and to induce vomiting.
